Your Gift Gives Older Adults like Norman, and his late wife, Jean, access to Compassionate, High-Quality Services

Norman Shenk is a Landis Homes resident, and he shared a little of his journey with Landis Communities.

Norman and his late wife, Jean, had been familiar with Landis Communities for many years, serving in various ways and playing an important part in the growth of Landis Communities and all of its affiliates – specifically serving on the board of Landis Homes and Welsh Mountain Home for several years.

They moved to Landis Homes in 2013. Jean had been diagnosed with a form of dementia, and their three sons encouraged the move.

“It was a long, long goodbye. We lived in a cottage those first seven years and were very happy. However, Jean’s dementia continued to progress so we moved into an apartment. Once moved, her care became heavier so we had Landis at Home come in to assist her. They were here every day for longer and longer periods.

While, at first, I was resistant to allowing others to care for her when I felt capable, I’m glad they helped. It was a relief for me and kept me from burning out. Eventually, Jean had to move from our apartment to a higher level of care. After she moved, I would visit her every morning. I was there 761 mornings to assist her with breakfast until she passed,” Norman shared.

Norman and Jean are just two of the older adults in our community who have benefitted from a variety of the services offered across Landis Communities.
