Landis Quality Living is pleased to announce the appointment of Susan Behmer Waterfield to its Board of Directors. Susan brings a wealth of experience and commitment to her new role. Her career has spanned a variety of roles, each of which has been characterized by a strong commitment to social impact and sustainable development.

From 1996-2010, Susan was an independent consultant in the field of microenterprise development.  She is the founding chair of the board of Chestnut Housing, a nonprofit providing quality affordable rental housing to families and individuals experiencing homelessness in the City of Lancaster. Susan served for 10 years on the Lancaster County Coalition to End Homelessness.

Susan previously served as Director of Domestic Economic Development for Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) and oversaw MEDA’s small business development programs in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and Santa Cruz, Bolivia. She also worked closely with a wide variety of local community groups and individuals to found ASSETS, a local nonprofit organization offering training and resources for local, underrepresented entrepreneurs to build successful businesses. 

Susan’s interests extend beyond her professional accomplishments. In 2014, she completed her MSW program at Temple University with a focus on policy development. Her academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois, where she studied abroad at the University of Barcelona. In addition, Susan holds a legal assistant certification from the University of Minnesota and studied Human Resource Development at Azusa Pacific University.

Susan shares her excitement about joining the Landis Quality Living Board: “Throughout my career, I focused on finding ways to lift people out of poverty by increasing their incomes. In recent years, I have turned to the challenge of homelessness. Now, I am thrilled to bring my experience to this talented team. Whether it’s addressing poverty or creating affordable housing, I believe in making a difference.”

Evon Bergey, the executive director of Landis Quality Living, notes, “Susan’s background in entrepreneurship and her strong advocacy for attainable housing adds a wealth of expertise to the Landis Quality Living Board. Her passion and commitment to individual and community well-being aligns well with our mission.”

LQL Board Chair Keith Stuckey is excited to have Susan join as a new member saying, “Susan has a significant track record of leadership in addressing housing needs in various community contexts and resonates with the board’s commitment to provide quality housing and support services to seniors in the middle- and lower-income brackets in the broader Lancaster community.”
