Michele Sipel to lead InHome Services

Lititz, Pa. – October 11, 2016

Landis Communities today announced the hiring of Michele Sipel, of Holtwood, Pa., as the Director of InHome Services.

Michele is an Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) and comes with extensive leadership, community service, operations, and rehabilitation.  Michele spent more than seven years at Willow Valley Communities.  During that time, she held positions of Director of Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) and prior to that, Rehabilitation Team Leader.  As Director of HCBS, Michele successfully launched their Home Care Program and a Continuing Care at Home program.  In this role Michele was responsible for overseeing all service delivery, staffing, education, budget development and management, marketing and development of policies and procedures. 

 Prior to her work with Willow Valley, Michele served as Regional Director of Operations for Select Medical Rehab Services which included service delivery, fiscal management, program development, staffing, employee education, quality assurance and compliance. 

In announcing this move, Evon Bergey, Landis Communities Vice President of Community Initiatives, commented, “We are excited for Michele to join our team.  Michele’s experience in launching and growing Home and Community Based Services aligns well with our strategic priorities.  Michele brings her passion for supporting individuals so they can remain in the home of their choice while receiving the services helping them to thrive.”

Commenting on her appointment, Sipel said, “I am very excited to join the team at Landis Communities!  I look forward to working with the residents at Landis Homes and those in the greater community to provide quality home-based services to allow each person to be as independent and well as possible in their homes.”

Landis Communities was formed in September 2011, and grows out of the 50 plus year history of Landis Homes Retirement Community. It remains committed to the vision present at Landis Homes’ beginning while preparing for growth and change during the years to come. The organization is committed to the following goals: Keeping retirement living strong and vital; Providing a number of affordable living options, including new models of age 55+ active adult living; Providing services at home – supporting aging in place; and to developing creative partnerships in support of all of these areas. Evon Bergey, of Perkasie, Pa., named Vice President of Community Initiatives.

Evon comes to Landis Communities with extensive experience within a national, innovative health care company. Since 2000, Evon held a variety of leadership positions within Magellan Healthcare. She served as Chief Operations Officer, Interim, for Magellan Complete Care of Florida. She also served as Vice President Operations, Public Markets in the National Operations office. Throughout her time at Magellan, she provided behavioral healthcare executive management with responsibility for all aspects of operational, clinical, quality, compliance, programmatic, and call center deliverables. Her track record also includes developing and managing collaborative account relationships, targeted strategic planning, innovative program design and development, strong team building, redesign of processes for efficiencies, maximization and integration of technology, and consistent leadership focus on data and outcomes. Prior to her time with Magellan, she served with Penn Foundation Behavioral Health Services, Sellersville, Pa., closing out her time there as Clinical Director, in charge of clinical services for three outpatient offices in Bucks County, Pa.

Ms. Bergey holds a Master of Social Work degree from University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia PA and a B.S. in Psychology and Sociology from Gwynedd-Mercy College, Gwynedd Valley, PA. She started her studies at Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Va., earning an A.A.in Business Administration.

Landis Communities CEO/President Larry Zook noted, “Arising out of the December 2015 Landis Communities Board Strategic Visioning sessions, we decided to recruit a VP of Community Initiatives to help guide our work into the future in the areas of affordable housing/living options and in-home and community based services. This new position replaces the Vice President of Business Development role held by Daryl Peifer until his recent retirement.” Zook went on to say, “after an extensive search process, Evon’s experience helping to grow Magellan’s home and community based services, along with her strong understanding of our organizational values, caused her to rise to the top of our list. We are grateful to see her joining our Leadership Team.”

Commenting on this appointment, Bergey said, “I am excited to take on this role. The position description, as well as the organization’s mission and strategic direction, are energizing. The role of Vice President of Community Initiatives will be pivotal in continuing to help the organization realize its key priorities, including increasing the number of individuals served by Landis Communities through affordable living options and services at home.”

Clergy Breakfast set for May 19.

Landis Communities invites clergy and lay leaders to a breakfast planned for Thursday, May19, 2016 at Landis Homes in the Westview Community Room.

The theme for the morning is “Pastoral Care for Seniors Experiencing Mental Illness and Dementia“. Input will come from a number of experts in the field and there will be time for questions and conversation. Caring for the caregiver

A recent article in Today’s Caregiver highlighted an important issue people are often not comfortable discussing.  That is the feelings of guilt accompanying the juggling acts of keeping life moving along while providing care for an aging parent.  Please take a few moments to read this article here.  If you know someone who is struggling to “keep all the balls in the air,” consider sharing the Landis Communities Web site with them.  Not only do we provide a variety of Comforting Live-at-Home Services and Feel-at-Home Communities, we also have speakers able to share with groups how they can walk alongside those who are giving this important care.  If you are interested in seeing a list of speakers click here

Newspapers in Education Winner

Landis Communities again took part in the Newspaper in Education program with Lancaster Newspapers.  This year, students were asked to create an ad for Landis At Home.  Not only did Quaden Fogelman of Nitrauer Elementary win, it was selected as the Best in Show out of all the entries!  Larry Guengerich, Director of Communications from Landis Communities is shown here presenting Quaden with his certificate and prize money!

Landis Communities to participate in ExtraOrdinary Give Nov. 21

For the second year, Landis Communities will be participating in the #ExtraGive campaign.  This effort, is a chance to be part of a community-wide celebration of giving. Donations will be accepted November 21, 2014 from 12 midnight – 11:59 PM. On that day, every dollar donated will be stretched by $250,000 from the Lancaster County Community Foundation and presenting sponsors Rodgers & Associates. An additional $50,000 will be awarded in prizes to the causes you care about! Throughout the day there will be events and giving celebrations throughout Lancaster County.  As you prepare for this day, please consider giving to Landis Communities.  Last year we raised more than $5,000 during the event and we hope to do that again.  The funds raised are very helpful as we continue to enhance the lives of nearly 1,500 residents and clients across our umbrella of organizations!

Landis Communities Names Vice President of Finance/CFO

LITITZ, PA – Landis Communities today announced the hiring of Eric Bender, of Lancaster, as Vice President of Finance/CFO.

Eric comes to Landis Communities with more than 20 years of experience in accounting and managing organizational finances. Most recently, Eric served as the VP of Finance/CFO for New Dawn Christian Community Services, Myerstown, PA beginning in 2008.  Before that, he  held positions of Controller and Senior Accountant for the same organization.  He also spent four years as the CFO of Water Street Rescue Mission in Lancaster, PA from 1997-2001.

Eric has a BS in Accounting from Grove City College, Grove City, PA as well as a MBA in Non-Profit Management from Regent University, Virginia Beach, VA.  In addition, he holds a MA in Biblical Studies from Evangelical Theological Seminary, Myerstown.  He earned his CPA licensure in 1994 and holds membership in both the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants as well as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. 

CEO/President Larry Zook noted, “We are excited to welcome Eric to the Landis Communities team.  As the organization grows and becomes more financially complex, we are grateful to have him, with all his experience, guiding the important work of the Finance team.  In addition, his participation in past strategic planning exercises is important as a number of Landis Communities entities are going through times of growth and change.”

Landis Communities Names Vice President of Advancement

LITITZ, PA – Landis Communities today announced the hiring of Beth Trout, of Lititz, as Vice President of Advancement/Chief Advancement Officer.

Beth comes to Landis Communities with nearly 25 years of experience in the development world. Her most recent employment was with Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, Palmyra, Pa., where she served as Director of Development. Previously she served 14 years with American Heart Association, Inc., in a number of roles including Vice President of Eastern PA Mid and Small Metros, where she led a staff of 20 in raising funds for the organization’s work. Prior to that, she served as Executive Director of the Child Abuse Prevention Committee of Central Pennsylvania.

CEO/President Larry Zook noted, “We are happy to welcome Beth to the Landis Communities team as Vice President of Advancement. This new position supports the expanding mission of Landis Communities. Beth will lead the efforts of the Advancement/Gift Planning team while also serving as the primary major and planned giving connecting point. She will also give leadership to the creation of annual and capital fundraising projects, not only for Landis Homes, but for other entities that are part of Landis Communities.”
